How We Coach

While we can throw a lot of technical terms out at you to explain our philosophy and approach to coaching, the bottom line is this: it's a personalized program that will bring out the best in your performance. We take into account your work or school schedule, family commitments, fitness, and mental make-up. At South Bay Multi Sport we know all of this matters to you, and we work to keep you balanced, while still striving to improve YOU as an athlete.

About Us and the Name

San Diego is the birthplace of triathlon. In the south part of the county, more affectionately known as the South Bay, there is a rapidly expanding community of athletes that are pushing their endurance limits. We are a home-grown network of local coaches who love their community and want to put South Bay triathlon on the map. When looking to start a coaching network we knew South Bay was something we wanted to put in our name. If you've never been to the South Bay, we'd love to see you out here mixing it up with us on our roads and trails.

The local "fast guy"-turned-Coach

Growing up a water polo player and swimmer, Zack embarked on his triathlon journey following an injury which kept him out of the pool and put him on the high school track team as a third string distance runner. His introduction to running led him to seek bigger challenges in college, as he found his true talents lay in triathlon rather than a single sport. Success came through several years of intense work, and in 2014, Zack achieved his long time goal of turning Pro in the sport he loved. Following a stint in Boulder, Colorado to finish his undergrad degree, and learn the ropes of coaching and training at altitude, Zack returned to his home in Chula Vista to pursue endurance coaching full-time. His commitment to success and athletic excellence has been key in the development of his athletes.

Weekend Warrior-turned-Ironman

Josh had just finished grad school, he was married, a father and working 50+ hours a week at a sweet corporate job. But Josh was also 55 pounds overweight and knew he needed to make a change. He found a used bike on Craigslist and signed up for a triathlon with the encouragement of a coworker. Finishing just about last in his age group, he had officially become a triathlete. Over the next five years, he dropped the 55 pounds and has become a fierce competitor in the sport. He capped off his five year journey by conquering Ironman Arizona in 2015. Josh is capable of working with the weekend warrior or the fast age-grouper, but he does enjoy the process of watching people just like him transform into endurance athletes.

Mark grew up playing baseball and soccer, and continued competing in baseball through his 4 years at UC Davis. While in high school, he noticed his running potential while performing conditioning workouts for his sports teams. After graduating, he began competing in triathlons for UC Davis, and transitioned from novice to elite age grouper over his 4 years on the team. He holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise Biology and is currently working on his Masters in Exercise Physiology. Mark races for Team Every Man Jack and recently qualified for his Elite License, intending to race professionally next season. He has experience learning from some of the best coaches in the sport, having worked with both Brett Sutton and Matt Dixon. He is excited to share his knowledge of the sport with elite age groupers and beginners alike.

"I've been coached by Zack for over two years now. I went from finishing my first triathlon, to taking the top spot in my age group only a year later. I've also lowered my marathon PR by over 10 minutes, and my half-marathon PR by over 4 minutes this last year. Zack trained me for my first half-Ironman, which I completed in well under 5 hours, and we are now targeting a podium and 70.3 world championship slot in the next 3 months. His passion and dedication to my success has been the biggest benefit to reaching my goals!" - Mark Rocha

"South Bay Multi Sport has brought me up to new levels of accomplishments in the sport of triathlon. The coaches know exactly what it takes for each individual athlete to reach their full potential. Under the coaching of Zack hammer, I was able to PR and place top ten in my age group for the 2016 Mission Bay Triathlon for the first time since 2012. Furthermore, I placed 1st in my age group at the 2016 Chula Vista Challenge Sprint Triathlon which qualified me for the Age Group National Championships. My favorite part about being in this family of athletes is the encouragement and motivation you get on and off season. Coach Zack and Coach Josh work hard to see their athletes take on PR's and podiums."

"Coach Josh did an excellent job of preparing me physically, mentally, and logistically for my first half marathon. I had never run at this level before, and in a very short amount of time, he was able to prepare me by creating an easy-to-follow running plan. He responded to my questions and concerns with his own careful thought and expertise. I successfully completed my first half marathon and continued running from then on. Joshua is passionate about what he teaches, he very knowledgeable, and very supportive!" - Montse Tamez

I have been doing triathlons recreationally for a couple of years, until last year when the constant pressure of meeting time goals and fitting trainings into an already-packed week made the sport feel more like a chore than a fun, stress-relieving activity. I knew I needed the encouragement, expertise, and accountability of a certified coach to help me physically and mentally survive the training for my upcoming Half Ironman. Not only did I find all that in Coach Josh, but I've also found a confidant who's extremely understanding of busy schedules and random things life throws your way - because he himself has mastered the optional triathlon training even with a crazy schedule and a ton of responsibilities. With Josh's guidance and support, I've was able to quickly and safely regain fitness from over 9 months of stagnation and had a personal best race at Ironman 70.3 Cebu.
